Description

The term Kasavu refers to the name of a material used in the manufacturing process of zari used in the border of Kasavu Handloom. It’s typically off-white Saree, Mundu or Settu Mundu (2 piece garment known as Mundum Neriyathum ) with Golden/colored borders. They are worn by both Men and women. Men usually wear it with a shirt while women wear it with a red blouse. Given the lightweight and breathable nature of these undyed white cottons, these textiles are ideal for the warm, humid climate in Kerala, where they are woven. There are notably three famous clusters namely, Balaramapuram, Chendamangalam and Kuthampully who have been given the Geographical Identification (GI) tag by the Indian government. Each cluster is slightly different due to certain unique elements they specialize in.
