Description

Chettinad is a type of Kandangi Handloom woven by the Nagarathar, Chettiyar and Devanga communities, in the town of Karaikudi. A distinguishing trait of Chettinad handloom weaves is the strikingly contrasting color combinations and big borders .Traditionally, earthy color palette was used due to the easy availability of natural dyes like mancatti (Indian madder) and manjal (turmeric).

Laksha Deepam sarees are a close cousin of the Ayiram Butta sarees. The concept is similar but the checks are smaller and the butta is usually a small dot within each box. Laksha means a Lakh (One hundred thousand). Each dot represents a deepam or lamp.
