Description:

Ajrakh is a unique combination of hand block printing and resist dyeing craft that dates back to medieval times. In India, it is now practiced in Ajrakhpur, Gujarat by the khatris community. They characteristically have complex geometric patterns and floral motifs inspired by the islamic architecture. They use vegetable dyes in deep blue, red and black colors. These shawls are hand crafted by an artisans from Khamir. Khamir was born in 2005 as a joint initiative which works to strengthen and promote the rich artisanal traditions of Kachchh district.  It serves as a platform for the promotion of traditional handicrafts and allied cultural practices, the processes involved in their creation, and the preservation of culture, community and local environments.

Natural dyes are a nontoxic alternative to conventionally used synthetic dyes that are causing irreversible damage to the planet. A number of plant-based dyes such as madder, indigo and Tesu flowers are used to obtain a wide range of colors and in fact, results in vibrant colors. They are dyed in Kutch, Gujarat using vegetable dyes.
